Not just a pretty face: how to make your website work for you

By 4 September 2012No Comments

Having a website in this age of technology is vital, customers want to be able to see what you do from the comfort of their home, or in the palm of their hand.  You have to provide a quick and easy way for users to purchase or contact you. Once your website is live you might think that people will just stumble across it and you’ll make shed loads of money. Unfortunately this isn’t the case, and you need to market your website to make it work for you.

Here are our  top 10 top tips to market your website and get your business booming.

 1.  SEO

Search Engine Optimisation means that you place relevant key word phrases throughout your website. The aim of the game is to appear high up on search engine results pages when those key phrases are searched, because let’s face it, who looks beyond the first few pages.

2. Blogging

Having regular blogs on your website keeps people coming back for more and blogging for others in your industry means you can link to your own site at the end of your post.

3. PPC

Pay Per Click means you pay a fixed price for every click your ad gets. The goal is to convert those clicks in to sales or leads depending on your goal. The easiest way to implement this on your site is to use Google AdWords.

4. Re-targeting

Unfortunately 98% of traffic will leave your site without converting to a sale and re-targeting is the best way to get them back. By placing a tracking cookie on your visitors computers, ads will appear to entice them back when they leave, and once they’re back they will hopefully convert to a sale.

5. Facebook ads

There were 483 million users in December 2011 and if you target the right group of users, getting sales should be like shooting fish in a barrel. Similar to Google AdWords, you are piggybacking off the traffic already there.

6. Youtube/Vimeo

This method is fantastic as other people can share your videos, meaning your video could end up in millions of places. Concentrate on a strong call to action, telling your viewers where (your website), how (link) and why (something enticing, urging them to buy).

7.  Email marketing

An oldy but a goody. Compel people to subscribe and then regularly send them exciting content and promotional offers so that they don’t unsubscribe.

8. Word of mouth

This is the best way to generate sales as your customers will already trust you, based on the recommendation given by someone else. Create a Facebook fan page and get involved in online forums that relate to your industry and business.

9. Social media

This method is about building relationships rather than the sales pitch. It gives you a chance to create a dialogue with your customers, and can be useful for customer service or in times of crisis when your customers need reassurance.

10.  PR

Building your reputation is key and the best way to do this is to get your business reviewed by trusted sources, such as industry journalists. Alternatively you can send out press releases to create a buzz about your business.

So…

To get the most out of your website you need to choose a web designer that will support you after they’ve created your site. If they disappear in to the mists of time as soon as your site has gone live, then they’re no good.
