Free online logo makers and why they cost you more than a professional

By 6 November 2012No Comments

We know that when you’re just starting up your business every time you have to spend money can feel very painful. Using a free online logo maker can seem like a very tempting option, but there are several things you should consider before going down this route.

Your business won’t look professional

The general public are pretty design savvy. We see professional artwork, logos and branding all day every day and as a result even untrained eyes can spot stock images and poor quality design. If you want to brand your new business with a professional identity there are few worse things you can do than skimping on logo design.

You won’t be taking advantage of the skills and talent of professional design experts

Professional logo designers are highly skilled, talented and experienced individuals. They know all the ins and outs of creating brand identity, and keep up to date with trends and the latest research of how certain fonts, colours and graphics are perceived. There is no way that a logo maker could stand up to a logo designed professionally. They can advise you and design something which exactly fits your needs, is creative, appropriate to your industry and up to spec in terms of the software used to create it.

Your logo will be stock, bog standard. Not custom, unique and memorable.

Logo makers allow you to pick from a selection of ready-made templates. This restricts you in several ways.

  1. Your logo dimensions may be out of your hands (what if you need something that looks good over your door? Or on the side of your van? Or as an icon for your app?). Does your stock logo give you professional file formats?
  2. You have limited choices of colour, font and personalisation. In the world of logo design a small change can make a big difference. From just another logo, to your logo. You don’t want ANY restrictions to the creation of your main brand image.
  3. You can forget creativity. Your logo will look boring and clichéd as these logo makers have to cover very wide bases.

A stock logo will be an easily forgotten logo. Professional logos are all 100% unique, designed from scratch and taking into account all your needs, feedback and with unlimited opportunities for revisions. This is the only way to get that perfect logo.

It is more time consuming

Remember that time is money. You may think that a free logo maker is a saving when your start-up funds are feeling tight. But if you’re spending 3 hours playing around with logo makers you are wasting 3 hours that could be spent on your new business, finding leads, securing recommendations etc. How much is 3 hours of your time worth at an hourly rate? That’s how much your stock logo is costing you.

They give you far less value for money

However x many hours of time you spend on your logo, you won’t end up with a logo which is right. The restrictions of logo makers mean that you will be forced to compromise and even if it isn’t awful, it won’t be right and it will never be great.

When you consider that you can get a professional logo designed from just £60, with unlimited revisions, custom design suited to your needs, comprehensive advice and support from experts and full ownership with the ability to get your logo trademarked, you’d be mad not to take advantage of it.
